BMW M2

WG Motorworks Tuning Guide

BMW's first 2 Series M car, (the M2). Leaving the factory with 365HP and a quoted 500NM torque using a temporary overboost feature, which feels right at home within the M division fetled 2 Series chassis. Both 6 speed manual and 7 speed DCT gearboxes were offered.

The M2's engine is a 3.0 litre straight 6 power plant, equipped with Valvetronic (Variable cam lift), a single turbocharger (Twin Scroll) with direct injection fuel system, known as the N55 engine which was upgraded with a revised oil system and different turbo from the normal BMW N55 range. With the official engine code of N55B30T0 which is a predecessor of the N54 twin turbo 3.0 engine.

S55 Engine ECU tuning can be offered across two options, our standard tune with its proven calibrations - which have been Dyno, Track, and also importantly Road tested. Alternatively, and preferably we can offer ECUTEK Racerom software which allows us to enhance more aspects of the engine including on the fly map switching features, rolling anti-lag while allowing the end-user to adjust certain parameters with a Bluetooth device with phone APP

For the power-hungry folk or those who simply want to improve their soundtrack - plenty of upgrades can be offered from MOT legal exhaust systems or full track-ready systems (Not road legal), along with Hybrid turbochargers and engine cooling upgrades. Click here for Performance Upgrades

For those Track Addicts, Nurburgring goers, or simply for those who have increased their power and want a chassis to match, we can offer simple upgrades from lowering springs, performance pads to full Coilover systems. anti-roll bars and limited-slip differential upgrades. xHP Gearbox Software

Also with our BMW tuning services, we are able to offer the world renowned xHP DCT Gearbox software, this software dramatically changes the whole driving experience providing instant paddle response, rapid shift speeds, revised shift points while adding aggressive throttle blips on downshifts under braking in automatic mode. The biggest benefit comes to tuning, with the increased clutch pressures we are now able to run more torque without slip issues or having to upgrade expensive clutch packs. Tuning

All our tuning is carried out with extensive knowledge of BMW tuning, limitations and experience, over time we will update software and hardware recommendations.  Our custom software calibrations can be offered to suit your needs if you already have hardware installed, tailored to your requirements (within hardware boundaries) or we have put together our recommended products that we have tried and tested our renowned WGM Tuning packages.

With our custom software calibrations, the following features are offered:

  • Vmax Removal (Speed limiter removed)
  • Sports Displays recalibrated to suit new outputs
  • Enhanced overrun on Sports mode
  • Cat warm-up removal

For Additional Features such as Map Switching, Antilag, and burble adjustment a Tuning Platform is required from the likes of ECUTEK, MHD or BM3, these are available at additional licence costs.

Expected Results are based on testing carried out on our Dyno Dynamics Dyno Tech AWD Rolling Road, from cars we have seen, and carried out development on, Results can vary from car to car, health and fuel quality used, all results are based on using 99ron based fuels. WG Motorworks only recommends tuning on 99ron, Shell V Power, Tesco Momentum and Esso 99

Common Issues:
When increasing the boost pressure while tuning it is known that the cold side charge pipe can often fail, leading to a total loss of boost pressure, so for reliability, it is recommended that this pipe be replaced with one constructed from aluminium instead.

Gearboxes:
The majority of M cars come with the 7-speed DCT Gearboxes, which are known to take additional power and torque typically without issues, only when exceeding 600LBFT would we expect any issues with clutch slip. This can be easily addressed however with increased clutch pressures via software. No Software limitations are present restricting torque output with the DCT Box.
The rarer 6 speed manual gearboxes come equipped with a Twin plated clutch system, which has proven to hold up with over 550LBFT also without issues.

Additional Software:
To complement the Engine software, we recommend xHP Gearbox software (more information above) or the GTS M Software, both sharpen up the gearbox, however xHP Software is always superior. We are also able to apply the GTS / M Motorsport Calibrations to the Rear Differential, MDM (Traction Control) and Steering, more info can be found here.

Stage 1

The first step in extracting power from the N55 engine requires no hardware changes, this is a software-only upgrade. The ECU software follows the linear torque delivery like a stock through the low to mid-range while adding a nice 40-45 lb-ft across the curve (maximizing flow).

Expected Results, based on our Dyno Dynamics rolling Road: 395-415HP with 430-470LBFT

Stage 1+

An additional mod that improves the Flow of the stock turbocharger is to remove the catalyst from the downpipe, either replacing it with a high-flow sports catalyst for road use, retaining the cars MOT legality, or the use of a replacement pipe with no catalyst for cars only used on the track. With the free-flowing downpipe installed, fuelling can be optimized and new lambda targets set, we can add a slight increase in boost pressure and ignition timing to take advantage of this setup. Standard cat-back can be retained, however, optimal results are based on a free-flowing turbo-back system. Low-end response is improved and turbo lag is reduced, torque levels are increased across the complete rev range. The final Torque output is limited to the capacity of the standard fuel pump at this point.

Expected Results, based on our Dyno Dynamics rolling Road: 400-420HP with 450-470LBFT

Stage 2

The intercooler is the limiting factor when it comes to tuning the N55 Engine, with Intakes easily hitting 50-60+ degrees Celsius on a single power run. To maximize the performance of the stock turbocharger we install an air-to-air intercooler with a much larger core and overall surface area, dramatically improving intake temperatures - instantly picking up horsepower and most importantly consistency, especially in the summer months when the standard intercooler will struggle, causing power to flatten off at higher RPM. With the intake cooling system improved ignition timing can be advanced gaining even more power. Torque levels are limited to the capacity of the stock fuel pump.

Expected Results, based on our Dyno Dynamics rolling Road: 415-435HP 460-470LBFT

Stage 2+

The final hardware change for maximizing the standard turbochargers efficiency range, which allows us to ramp up the mid-range boost to gain optimal airflow is a fuel pump upgrade. The issue of the standard fuel system becomes clear if attempting to run much higher torque than 460-480lbft - the fuel pressure will drop - this can cause limp mode or worse engine damage from lack of fuel pressure. To resolve this and to run greater torque levels (which requires more fuel volume) an upgraded HPFP (High-Pressure Fuel Pump) is installed, this allows more fuel volume per engine revolution (crankshaft chain driven pump) thus allowing more fuel volume without pressure drop.

When upgrading the fuel pump there are a few options, and we advise you to think about the future plans if any - if planning to run over 550HP on pump fuel, or even with ethanol blends an aftermarket pump is recommended, otherwise for the base upgrade we use a 'TU' fuel pump from the later B58 models (Z4 / Supra) This is a great cost-effective upgrade with much larger fuel large scope range.

Expected Results, based on our Dyno Dynamics rolling Road: 430-450HP with 490-530LBFT

Stage 3

The stock turbocharger is the limiting factor when it comes to the next stage of performance, with compressor/turbines limiting any more flow, we can resolve this by installing a new turbocharger with a larger compressor and turbine wheels into the stock turbo housing, this 'Hybrid' will allow much greater air and exhaust gas flow.

With the improved intercooler and exhaust systems already installed, the fuel system will require upgrading to allow adequate fuelling to match the increased airflow mass that the turbocharger can produce. The exact results will depend on the turbocharger chosen, and the fuelling systems used.

Water methanol injection would also be a worthwhile upgrade when pushing for maximum power output. Calibrations for all common HPFP's is offered, along with larger MAP sensor calibration (required for running over 1.5bar of boost.

Expected Results, based on our Dyno Dynamics rolling Road: 480-600HP 500-600LBFT
