BMW X3M X4M
WG Motorworks Tuning Guide
BMW SUV Series M car. Leaving the factory with 503HP and a quoted 479LBFT torque on the competition models which an impressive 0-62mph time of only 3.8 Seconds! Ditching the well-known DCT gearbox of the F series M cars, in favour of the more refined for daily driving, 8-speed renowned ZF8 Gearbox.
The X3M's engine is still a 3.0 litre straight 6 power plant, a cross between the B58, and former M S55 set-up, running a twin-turbo, twin fuel pump direct injection fuel system, now hooked to a 4wd system that means traction issues are a distant memory, which a new set up that is seeing new levels of unlockable power with basic modifcations!
S58 Engine ECU tuning can be offered across two options, our standard tune with its proven calibrations - which have been Dyno, Track, and also importantly Road tested. Alternatively, and preferably we can offer ECUTEK Racerom software which allows us to enhance more aspects of the engine including on-the-fly map switching features, rolling anti-lag while allowing the end-user to adjust certain parameters with a Bluetooth device with phone APP
For the power-hungry folk or those who simply want to improve their soundtrack - plenty of upgrades can be offered from MOT-legal exhaust systems or full track-ready systems (Not road legal), along with Hybrid turbochargers, Intakes and engine cooling upgrades. Click here for Performance Upgrades
ECUTEK RaceRom
With our BMW tuning services, we are able to offer to tune over ECUTEK's Racerom platform - allowing us to offer some great features such as different MAP modes, creating different driving power outputs, octane, flex fuel, and Methanol maps, all of which can be switched while driving along. Along with this, we can offer on-the-fly burble adjustments, recalibrated sports dials to be used as charge temp/boost gauges, push-to-pass, and rolling anti-lag features to name a few! xHP Gearbox Software
Also with our BMW tuning services, we are able to offer the world renown xHP ZF8 Gearbox software, this software not only allows us to exceed certain levels of torque (Gearbox limiter removal) it dramatically changes the whole driving experience while retaining full comfort in normal driving modes but when switching to M or S modes increasing shift times by up to 50%, providing instant paddle response and gear change selection logic, throttle blips plus many more features! Infomation
DME Tuning Hard Lock:
All BMW Models manufactured after August 2020 have an DME lock that cannot be removed by current tuning tools, only one company can carry out this service at present, known as the Femto Unlock. We have to remove the ECU and ship it to this company to gain Writing access to the ECU. Typically the turnaround is one week.
Models before this date are able to have an In house DME Unlock service.
Warranty:
Any DME unlock will invalidate your Warranty with BMW for the Engine. If you do not wish to go down this route we can offer a Factory BMW Flash that allows OPF Removal (Mid pipe fitted) this coding change and will not flag up as being tuned. We can also offer tuning boxes, although not our preferred method. Therefore OPF removal software can be offered for those looking to enhance the muted S58 Factory soundtrack!
Gearboxes:
It can be noted that shifts are slow or hesitant, this is often exaggerated once the Engine is tuned. We offer xHP software for the ZF8 HP76 Gearbox , which also removes the 760nm Gearbox internal torque limiter and dramatically improves shift speeds and logic allowing us to yield better gains. With the increased demand / tuning extremes we will be seeing, the Gearbox itself does have limits, however, there are already plenty of upgrades that we can offer.
Engine:
The S58 Engine is an M-division engine, with strong internals including forged pistons capable of 900HP+ out of the box. However, the first area of concern is the cast conrods when it comes to hiking up the torque, for those wanting to push a Stage 3 set up we recommend installing Forged conrods, alternatively building the torque curve more progressively is an alternative option. Engine upgrades are available, from simple conrod upgrades to fully built engines.
Fuel system:
Ethanol Fuel blends are becoming more popular, mainly due to the integration of plug-and-play Flex Fuel kits which integrate to the DME. Such large gains are often seen from adding Ethanol fuels, on pump fuel we cannot get to optimal ignition angles that create MBT (Maxiunum Brake Torque) due to knock limitations, with Ethanol (which also stores more energy), also suppress the knock allowing more ignition advance yielding big gains to be seen! However, Ethanol requires more fuel volume for the given airflow than normal pump fuel. Stage 2 with an E40 mix is typically the limit for the stock fuel system - those wanting to exceed this level or tune will be required to add port injectors into the intake manifold with an extra Low-pressure fuel pump (LPFP) . This is then integrated with a Motiv Reflex unit, which allows Canbus integration for the additional injectors to be controlled by the factory ECU.
Development:
All our development has been carried out within our software tuning group, on Dyno's and Road. And now with our own shop car.
With 1000HP+ setups under our belt, we cater for anything from OPF Removals to Stage 3 S58's with built engines.
Tuning:
All our tuning is carried out with extensive knowledge of BMW engines, limitations and experience, over time we will update software and hardware recommendations. Our custom software calibrations can be offered to suit your needs if you already have hardware installed, tailored to your requirements (within hardware boundaries) or we have put together our recommended products that we have tried and tested our renowned WGM Tuning packages.
For Additional Features such as Map Switching, Antilag, and burble adjustment a Tuning Platform is required from the likes of ECUTEK, MHD or BM3, these are available at additional licence costs.
Expected Results are based on testing carried out on our Dyno Dynamics Dyno Tech AWD Rolling Road, from cars we have seen, and carried out development on, Results can vary from car to car, health and fuel quality used, all results are based on using 99ron based fuels. WG Motorworks only recommends tuning on 99ron, Shell V Power, Tesco Momentum and Esso 99
Stage 1
The first step in extracting power from the S58 engine requires no hardware changes, this is a software-only upgrade. The software calibration optimises boost and ignition timing, with new lambda targets set.
Expected Results, based on our Dyno Dynamics rolling Road:Â 620-650HP - 650-680LBFT
Stage 1+
The first stage of extracting power from the S58 engine is a big one, by removing the OPF Filters / secondary cats from the exhaust. This is typically carried out with a Mid pipe, retaining the stock back box (or a full system can be installed) With the choice of a Single Pipe, or Equal length exhaust. This flow improvement dramatically changes the power curve, allowing more torque and power holding all the way to the limiter.
Expected Results, based on our Dyno Dynamics rolling Road: 670-700HP with 680-710LBFT Pump Fuel - 760-800HP With Ethanol E30-E40mix
Stage 2
The final hardware change for maximising the standard turbochargers efficiency range, is a full free-flowing exhaust system, removing the standard downpipes with Catless (not for road use) or Sports catted downpipes with a mid pipe / full system. Allowing fine-tuning optimisation over the Stage 1+ software.
Expected Results, based on our Dyno Dynamics rolling Road: 690-720HP 690-710LBFT on Pump fuel with 770-800HP Ethanol E30-E40mix
